Andy Jans-Brown
My philosophical statement
I believe in health and education and the arts and healthy self-expression and the seeking and creating of harmony and happiness where ever possible.
I believe everything we do in our human capacity should be in service and pursuit of these things.
I believe in taking responsibility for oneself and also for others rather than blaming or apathy.
I believe we each deserve the freedom to act in accordance with our hearts limited only by the laws laid out for the common good, sustainability and the promotion of health.
I believe in helping others and acting always with a sense of benevolence and accountability – I teach music, I’ve taught acting/drama – I’ve worked in community arts – (Awesome arts project in outback WA), (Cartwheels in the fire affected Cathedral Ranges of Victoria through Berry St and The Royal Children’s Hospital Festival for Healthy Living).
I believe that independence and interdependence are worth promoting.
I think artists, journalists, creators and innovators need to remain independent in order that they have the freedom to express their view or vision without too many limiting constraints, but I also believe we should all work together to help each other and encourage one another to reach the potential and excellence of our aims.
I grew up playing team sports.
Happiness is happiest when shared.
Or as my Pa once said to me , “He who climbs the highest is he who takes others with him”.
I believe in taking care of one another.
I believe in the practice of tolerance when differences are involved
I think we all come from different perspectives, no two cells in life are alike, not even the finger prints of identical twins and brains of course are made of cells and so therefor difference of opinions are a certainty – I think we should seek to find solutions to these differences that promote harmony and the sustainability of community and cohabitation.
I think we should all do what we can toward the greater good
I think the greater good is health, education, the arts and prosperity.
I think we should all be trained in intellectual self defense against psychologically manipulative media, propaganda and advertising.
I believe we are a part of something much bigger and should do whatever we can within our capacity to promote health and joy within ourselves and also within that something else that is much bigger.
I believe in being truthful and treating all life with respect.
I think being truthful with oneself is the love that births wisdom from suffering.
I believe we each deserve to live and die with dignity.
I believe in the individual’s right to choose.
I believe in the beauty of mystery and that life is both a spiritual and physical experience.
I believe not all things need to be explained.
I believe in love and romance and decency and poetry and art and deep conversations and synchronicity and a deep connection to eternity and that great mysterious thing with a centre everywhere and a circumference nowhere.
I believe we learn from our mistakes and so we each must strive to get back up when we fall down and simply make every effort to do better next time
Too much dwelling on our wrong doings or failings can only lead to stagnation and we were born to move on, we were born to change, we are change itself expressing itself in a wondrous dance of falling and landing – losing and gaining our balance many times over.
I believe the unknown is frightening but that we each must find our path to make peace with those uncertain things that can only be understood by experiencing – such as creativity, life, love, loss, death and longing
I believe everyone has a right to touch or commune with their own unique sense of the divine whether through art, music, love, birth, imagination, dreams, hallucinations or religion but that no person should be forced against their will to believe in someone else’s doctrine or belief
I believe criminals are sick and that prisons should be places they are sent to in order to heal, not made sicker
Of course there may well be those who are simply too dangerous to be a part of society – serial killers, sociopaths, psychopaths, serial sex offenders and other such out of control maniacs – these people have no place in society.
I believe we must strive for sustainability on all levels –
I believe all commerce should be in service of the common good
I believe in following your heart and being true to your dreams
I think if we each can find our passion – it will give us our purpose
I believe that great innovation comes from those who are truly connected to their passions
True motivation comes when our purpose is equal to the meaning of our lives
As Nietzsche wrote “ A man who has a why to live can endure any how”
I think for any job to be sustainable over time it must relate to us on a deeper level – it must relate to the meaning of our lives
As Noam Chomsky has said, “No person should be reduced to the role of a cog in a machine”
I believe in taking care of our environment and the importance of food as the true medicine
I believe we should listen to our bodies and to our intuition
I believe in singing and dancing
I think we should do all we can to make sure that food and the soil it comes from is healthy for all
I believe unhealthy food leads to an unhealthy community
I think a government should do what it can to protect its people from corporate greed not feed the very beast whose insatiable desire for emptiness will never fill one single stomach
I think there should be high taxes on unhealthy food just like with cigarettes and not just to the customer but to the corporations who want to promote such unhealthy things in the first place
Same should go for polluters – tax the polluters and tax the food polluters
Governments should be in place to guarantee health, safety and education to its people
That is the first role of government!
Everything else must first be in service of these three things.
I believe in supporting local business where ever possible
I believe in supporting small business over corporates as long as the small business is ethical and provides a good product
I believe in providing an ethical and good product
I believe in freedom of speech
I think art is an expression and a marriage of both the conscious and the subconscious
I believe we should support artists and musicians to encourage the expression of the voice of our times not simply worship the creativity of past generations in museums
I believe it is time for a new global economy – one based on the promotion of health and joy and sustainability
I think the old economy based on greed and war should be subject to devolution.
I think the survival of our species depends on this.
I think we may well end up evolving into organic machines, some kind of high bred human cyborg type thing , but it is my prayer that these beings still value the beauty of a poem, a song, a well told story- it is my prayer these beings are still capable of love, and romance and deep compassion and tears and a sense of mysticism - for in my heart and in my mind these are true treasures of existence.
I believe words are best when sung, spoken with love and encouragement or when read from the pages of a good book.
I believe that light is prettiest at dusk and at dawn.
I believe Melbourne is prettiest in autumn.
I believe life should be savored not rushed.
When I am no more it shall be the beauty of life that stole my last breath away.
